Co-edited by Tanner with Joe Curnow (University of Manitoba) and illustrated by Andrew Kohan, Learning to Engage: Movements and Sociocultural Theories of Learning uses comics to explore concepts from learning sciences research that may be of interest to organizers and activists.

The comics grew out of a conference on the learning sciences, politics, and civic engagement, with support from the Spencer Foundation. A limited print run was distributed for free to educators, researchers, and community members across North America and the world in summer 2020. Then, the comics underwent peer review and were published in February 2021 as a special forum in the comics journal Sequentials.

Additional contributors include: Ben Kirshner, Josephine H. Pham, Thomas M. Philip, Suraj Uttamchandani, A. Susan Jurow, and Molly Shea.

The comics are also available in printable zine form.
